Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Using a mandoline, slice the potatoes thinly to about ⅛-inch thickness.
  • In a medium saucepan, combine the heavy cream (or béchamel), onion, garlic, thyme, nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Warm for about 5 minutes.
  • Create a layer of sliced potatoes in a lightly greased baking dish. Pour some cream mixture over and sprinkle with Gruyère cheese.
  • Continue layering potatoes, cream, and Gruyère cheese until all ingredients are used, finishing with a cheese layer.
  • Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 40 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake uncovered for an additional 30 minutes, until golden brown.
  • Let the gratin cool for about 5-10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For the best texture, avoid freezing if possible. Freshly baked gratin offers the ultimate creamy and cheesy experience.
