Ingredients
  

For the Croissant Layer

  • 8 large croissants Cut in half lengthwise for the best custard absorption.

For the Custard Mixture

  • 2 cups half and half or whole milk Use half and half for a richer flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract Adds delightful aroma.
  • 6 large eggs Provides structure and creamy texture.
  • ½ cup light brown sugar Lightly packed for sweetness.
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon Enhances warmth.
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg Adds aromatic earthiness.
  • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt Balances sweetness.

For the Berry Delight

  • 1 cup strawberries Cut into pieces.
  • 1 cup blueberries Adds juicy texture.

To Serve

  • powdered sugar For dusting.
  • lightly-sweetened whipped cream Optional.
  • 1 cup pure maple syrup For drizzling.
  • 1 tablespoon dark rum Optional for flavor.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Butter a 4- to 5-quart baking dish generously and set aside.
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together half and half, vanilla extract, eggs, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  • Dip halved croissants into the custard mixture one by one, ensuring each half is coated. Allow excess custard to drip off.
  • Layer the soaked croissants into the baking dish, overlapping slightly.
  • Pour the leftover custard mixture gently over the top, pressing down on the croissants slightly.
  • Sprinkle strawberries and blueberries in between and on top of croissants.
  • Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for 2 to 8 hours.
  • Preheat oven to 350°F. Remove the casserole from the fridge about 30 minutes before baking.
  • Uncover and bake covered with foil for the first 30 minutes.
  • After 30 minutes, remove cover and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes.
  • Let the bake rest for 10 minutes before slicing.
  • Dust with powdered sugar and serve immediately with syrup and whipped cream.

Notes

For best results, use fresh croissants and let the dish refrigerate overnight for enhanced flavor.
