  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line your baking sheets with parchment paper.
  • In a mixing bowl, beat together 1 cup softened unsalted butter and 1 cup powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add 1 large egg, 1 teaspoon vanilla extract, and 0.5 teaspoon peppermint extract and mix until smooth.
  • Gradually mix in 2.5 cups all-purpose flour and 0.5 teaspoon salt until a soft dough forms.
  • Divide the dough in half, dye one half with red gel food coloring.
  • Roll one teaspoon of each color into 4-inch ropes, twist and shape into candy cane forms.
  • Place on baking sheets and bake for 8-10 minutes until lightly golden on the bottoms.
  • Cool on the pan for 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
