Equipment

  • large bowl
  • pastry cutter
  • Rolling Pin
  • Baking sheet
  • parchment paper
  • wire rack

Ingredients

For the Dough

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 cup cold unsalted butter cubed
  • 2 teaspoons apple cider vinegar
  • 2 teaspoons water
  • 1 large egg for egg wash

For the Filling

  • 1 cup spiced apple pie filling

For the Glaze

  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon milk for drizzle consistency

Instructions

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • In a large bowl, combine 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 1 teaspoon of salt, and 3 tablespoons of granulated sugar. Cut in 1 cup of cold, cubed unsalted butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. This should take about 5 minutes.
  • Mix in 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar and 2 teaspoons of water until the dough comes together. Divide it in half and shape each half into a disc. Wrap each disc in plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  • Once chilled, flour your surface and roll out each disc into a rectangle, about ¼ inch thick.
  • Spoon 1 cup of spiced apple pie filling along the center of each rolled-out rectangle.
  • Fold the edges of the dough over the filling, forming a loose oval shape. Pinch the ends tightly to seal them.
  • Transfer the shaped kringle to a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the top with an egg wash made from 1 large egg and make a few slits on top for steam to escape.
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • While the kringle bakes, whisk together 1 cup of powdered sugar, ¼ teaspoon of vanilla extract, and 1 tablespoon of milk in a bowl.
  • After baking, allow the kringle to cool for 10 minutes, then drizzle the glaze over the top.

Notes

Chill your butter and don’t overfill the kringle for the best texture. Seal the edges well to prevent leakage.
